Chase 2000 - - Saturday 05/20

Saturday 5/20

Although we were in Odessa, the only threat of chaseable severe weather was in the north Texas panhandle.

So, we drove to Amarillo (after visiting NWS MAF and NWS Lubbock) and northward. A front was approaching from the NW and by the time we reached the vicinity (near Stratford, TX) the storms were collapsing, producing numerous wet and dry microbursts and very strong winds. A nice shelf cloud accompanied the outflow.

Near Dumas the part of the shelf we were following developed into a short lived cell:

To the south, a small system of storms developed and there is a picture of the overshooting top of one of these storms, with the last glint of the setting sun on it.
