How To Lose Your Phone Service Using Qwest's Online Bill Payment

Oh... btw... click here to read my blog!

Want to have your phone service disconnected without warning?

Just use QWest's online bill paying service!

Tonight around 5PM I discovered that I had no phone service on the four QWest lines that go to my house. This came, needless to say, as quite a shock. I thought maybe the high winds were responsible.

I called QWorst on my cell phone (ironically, on the same QWorst account - they were too incompetent to shut it down), and was informed that my account was disconnected for lack of payment!

Since I thought all my bills were up to date, this was more than slight little shock!

I had received NO phone call to warn me. If my house had caught fire, I would have had to scramble to get the cell phone, which barely works in my neighborhood anyway.

So, after reviewing my accounts and digging through the mail pile, here is what I discovered:

bullet

In mid December, I used QWorst's web site to pay my November bill using my mileage credit card.

bullet

The day after I left on vacation, my QWest bills arrived - one was my normal bill (which I would pay this week as I normally do), and the other was an envelope that looked exactly the same, but turned out to have a disconnect notice in it.

bullet

Naturally, since it wasn't yet bill paying time, I had not looked into the envelopes when sorting the huge stacks vacation mail. I just put them in the pile. BIG MISTAKE. QWest doesn't give you any slack!

bullet

When I checked tonight, the December payment didn't show up on my credit card payment. Apparently, QWorst had Lost My Payment!

bullet

But, QWorst is *supposed* to notify you by phone before they cut you off. The first person to answer the phone mumbled "It looks like they didn't follow procedure" - and then said (more clearly) that they had tried to notify me at 1PM. A Likely story: my caller ID shows one "Out Of Area" at 2PM... I don't think that was their call - it was at the wrong time, and why would QWest hide their own caller ID on such an important notification? For that matter, why didn't they leave a message? A lot of people screen their calls with an answering machine, after all!

bullet

Apparently they lied to me about the 1PM call!

bullet

Then, without warning, only 4 hours after they *claim* to have tried to notify me, all of my telephones were cut off. This is after 29 years of paying their bill every month.

bullet

So, I had to give their representative (who was, of course, treating me like a dead-beat) my credit card number to get my service back...

bullet

But it may take 24 hours!

bullet

So now, I will file a complaint with the Arizona Corporation Commission. Because of the lousy quality of telephone  service I have had from QWorst, I already have the phone number in my Palm Pilot;  this is nothing new -  just a complaint about having had my phone line yanked rather than one about their normal crummy telephone lines.

bullet

And, of course, they will no doubt file some sort of nasty with the credit reporting agencies, so I will have to dispute all of those.

bullet

If they weren't a monopoly, they would have gone out of business long ago because of how they treat their customers!
